The summer ‘pie people’ descend on Maine in droves every year. Being a pie lover myself, I had been looking for quite sometime for a really good book I could sell in the shop about pie making. The Art of the Pie is that book. It is like an entire pie reference book- with recipes. It’s author is renowned pie maker, Kate Mcdermott. She has built her career around making pies and her recipes are excellent. Every kind of pie you can think of is featured in the Art of the Pie. There are the classics blueberry, triple berry, apple, peach, strawberry rhubard, lemon meringue, to name a few. And the more unusual such as apple quince, cranberry, gooseberry and banana rum caramel coconut pie… There are recipes for hand pies, rustic tarts, meat pies and more. Interestingly, McDermott has celiac disease and as a result is known for her outstanding gluten free crust recipes as well.
