The summer ‘pie people’ descend on Maine in droves every year. Being a pie lover myself, I had been looking for quite some time for a really good book I could sell in the shop about pie making. The Art of the Pie is that book. It is like a complete pie reference book. Its author, renowned pie maker Kate Mcdermott, has built her career around making pies and her recipes are excellent. Every kind of pie you can think of is featured in the Art of the Pie. There are the classics blueberry, triple berry, apple, peach, strawberry rhubarb and lemon meringue, to name a few. Included are the more unusual such as apple quince, cranberry, gooseberry and banana rum caramel coconut pie… There are recipes for hand pies, rustic tarts, meat pies and more. Interestingly, McDermott has celiac disease and as a result, is known for her outstanding gluten-free crust recipes as well.
